America Has a Sitting Problem. We're Standing Up About It.

The National Association Against Sitting (NAAS) is a public-health nonprofit on a mission to reduce prolonged sedentary behavior, in workplaces, schools, communities, and daily life.

A national nonprofit. A real public-health issue. No gym required.

Sitting Is the Health Risk Nobody's Talking About

The Problem

Most adults spend 8 to 10 hours a day sitting: at their desk, in their car, on the couch. And most of them have no idea that prolonged sitting carries real health consequences, independent of whether they exercise.

Research links sedentary behavior to cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, blood sugar dysregulation, and musculoskeletal strain. The troubling part? Even people who hit the gym regularly aren't off the hook if they spend the rest of the day seated.

NAAS exists to change that; with clear, credible education and practical tools that help people and organizations actually do something about it.

The Numbers Don't Lie

8–10 Hours

The average time U.S. adults spend sitting each day, more than they spend sleeping.

Independent Risk

Prolonged sitting is now recognized as a health risk separate from physical inactivity. Exercise alone doesn't undo it.

Rarely Discussed

Despite decades of research, sedentary behavior is almost never addressed in workplaces, schools, or public-health campaigns.

That's the gap NAAS was built to close.

We translate the science into plain language, practical strategies, and real programs, so individuals and organizations can sit less and live better.

We Don't Do Guilt Trips. We Do Evidence.

Here's the thing about sedentary behavior: it's not a willpower problem. It's a design problem. Modern workplaces, commutes, and screen culture have made sitting the default, and most people never had a choice in the matter.

Sitting more has become built into the human experience, and our bodies were not designed for sedentary behavior. This adaptation has negative health outcomes substantiated by science.

NAAS approaches this as a public-health and environmental issue, not a personal failure. We're not here to shame anyone for sitting. We're here to arm people with the research, the tools, and the practical strategies to change their environments: at work, at home, and in their communities.

No blame. No quick fixes. Just real guidance grounded in movement science, behavioral health, and public-health research.

Research Translation

The science of sedentary behavior is growing fast, but most of it stays locked in academic journals. NAAS bridges that gap, turning peer reviewed research on sitting, physical inactivity, and movement health into plain language strategies that individuals and organizations can apply today.

best practices for reducing sedentary behavior in organizations

Standards & Best Practices

There is no universal playbook for reducing sedentary behavior in organizations, and there shouldn't be. NAAS supports the development of voluntary, adaptable frameworks that help workplaces, schools, and communities build healthier movement environments without mandates or one-size-fits-all solutions.

Why Prolonged Sitting Matters

Sitting has become the default often without us realizing it.

Prolonged sitting has become the default in modern adult life, often without deliberate choice or awareness. As people move through adulthood, daily routines increasingly involve time seated at desks, in vehicles, during meetings, and in front of screens.

This gradual shift toward sedentary behavior is rarely discussed, formally taught, or clearly explained. Over time, extended periods of sitting particularly when regular movement is limited or inconsistent have been associated with increased health risks.

The National Association Against Sitting (NAAS) exists to close this education gap by helping people understand how sedentary patterns develop, why they matter from a public-health perspective, and what evidence-informed strategies can help reduce prolonged sitting responsibly.

The organization works to improve understanding of sedentary behavior and its health impacts by providing accessible educational resources and promoting practical approaches that help individuals and organizations sit less and incorporate healthier movement patterns into daily life.

A Public-Health Approach to Sedentary Behavior

Sedentary behavior is increasingly recognized as an independent health risk separate from lack of exercise. Even individuals who meet recommended physical activity guidelines may experience negative health effects if they spend most of the day sitting.

NAAS promotes evidence-informed guidance based on research in public health, movement science, and behavioral health. Our goal is to help individuals and organizations understand sedentary behavior and create environments that support healthier levels of daily movement.
